The 2022-2023 Best Global Universities rankings include 2,000 top institutions from 95 countries. The ranking methodology involves two main steps:
Creating the Ranking Pool (2,011 institutions):
– The process begins with a pool of 2,011 universities.
– The top 250 universities from Clarivate’s global reputation survey are included.
– Additional institutions with at least 1,250 papers published from 2016 to 2020 are added.
Ranking Using Indicators (13 indicators):
– The universities are ranked based on 13 indicators and their weights.
– These indicators include global and regional research reputation, publications, books, conferences, citation impact, total citations, highly cited papers, and international collaboration.
– Reputation indicators are derived from Clarivate’s Academic Reputation Survey.
– Bibliometric indicators rely on data from Clarivate’s Web of Science for the period from 2016 to 2020.
US News & World Report take a bunch of things into account for these rankings, like how much research a university does, how often their work gets cited, and how well they collaborate globally. They use something called a z-score to make sure we’re comparing apples to apples across different measures. For certain indicators that might be skewed one way or another, we use logarithmic transformations – kind of an adjustment tool. Then finally, each university’s global score is worked out by mixing together these adjusted z-scores.
They also rank universities within specific regions and countries, using their global ranking. It’s like a leaderboard for each region or country. So you can see who’s leading the pack where it matters to you.
Plus, the way they rank colleges and universities tackles how they gather data and deal with any missing pieces, leaning on info given by Clarivate. They’ve kept their focus on papers from 2016 to 2020, using a steady method to handle any gaps in the data.
